The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)

The Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) is the system that allows:

  • pet dogs, cats and ferrets from certain countries and territories to enter the UK without quarantine as long as they meet the rules.

  • People in the UK to take their dogs, cats and ferrets to other European Union (EU) and certain non-EU countries and territories, and return with them to the UK without the need for quarantine.

The rules are to keep the UK free from rabies and certain other diseases.

Please visit the Official Government website. This site clearly presents the procedure for importing dogs and cats into the UK under the Pet Travel Scheme:

  • Pet Import for Animals Travelling to the UK
  • What you should do before arriving in the UK

All other pets traveling to the UK from countries that do not qualify for the Pet Travel Scheme, must complete 6 months quarantine, and arrive in the UK with an import permit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any circumstances when animals cannot fly?

Yes. Restrictions are sometimes imposed for the welfare of your pets when seasonal temperatures in the USA reach a minimum and maximum.

Where will my pet travel in the aircraft?

Your pet will travel in the livestock hold which is pressurised, heated.

Will my pet be given food and water prior to travelling?

We recommend that your pet is not fed prior to travel to avoid soiling their air kennel. All the boxes are fitted with water containers which are refilled during transits. International airports are well equipped to handle all types of animals and may transfer them to specialised animal holding units on long stopovers.

Will my pet be stressed from the flight?

More than a million pets fly safely world-wide every year and are well cared for. It is the captain's responsibility to know whether or not there are animals are on board and that certain procedures are adhered to. All animals are checked and watered on stopovers.

Will my pet have enough space in the air kennel?

Yes. We ensure that your pet will be able to stand, lie and turn around. Any extra space would be very costly and not recommended by the airlines due to injury from possible turbulence.

Will my pet need to be tranquilised before they travel?

The Ministry of Agriculture and veterinary surgeons strongly discourage tranquillising animals in the pressurised conditions of an aircraft. Adverse drug reactions and breathing difficulties may occur due to the change in air pressure. Airlines may refuse to carry sedated animals as they cannot detect their state of health. After the initial loading into the air kennels, pets soon settle down to the journey and fall asleep. To ensure your pet arrives at their destination healthy and happy, we at Wey Farm will not sedate pets.

What is the difference between 'Excess Baggage' and 'Air Cargo'?

'Excess Baggage' is when your pet is checked through with you and your luggage in the passenger terminal, but travels in the cargo hold on the plane.

'Air Cargo' is when your pet travels without a passenger and is checked in through a cargo terminal. The cargo terminals have livestock holding rooms and are used to dealing with many types of animals.
